Since 2012, July 14th is International Nonbinary Day, and since 2020, July8-14th is Nonbinary Awareness Week.
As an agender witch myself, I walk between β and beyond β the poles of gender. I am neither man nor woman, I am something else entirely. And in that liminal space, I have found my magic.
Wicca β and The Aspen Tradition β teaches that we are all literally descendants of the God and Goddess. We carry both their essences within us: solar and lunar, sword and chalice, fire and water, masculine and feminine. These energies are not just symbolic; they live in our breath, our choices, our bodies.
We see masculinity and femininity not as binaries to be enforced, but as forces within each of us to be balanced and expressed in the way we find most empowering.
To be nonbinary is not to reject the divine β it is to embody it.
πΏ Sacred Identities Across Cultures
In Indigenous North American traditions, Two-Spirit people are recognized as carrying both masculine and feminine spirits β often considered spiritually gifted. In South Asia, Hijras are honored in Hindu ceremonies for their power to bless, believed to be divinely touched. These identities are sacred, ancient, and resilient.
They teach us that gender fluidity is not a flaw. It is a facet of our spiritual inheritance.
π‘οΈ Autonomy, Expression & the Harm of Denial
Bodily autonomy is sacred. Our gender is not a debate. It is a lived truth.
When we are denied access to affirming care, when creative expression is policed, when harassment is normalized β it causes real, spiritual harm. The wound goes deeper than skin; it strikes at the soulβs sovereignty.
π Loving Who We Are and Who We Can Become
Itβs perfectly normal to love what you love β regardless of what the world says. If you’re a man who adores the color pink or a woman who feels most alive tuning carburetors, you’re not broken. You’re radiant.
Most people have something they wish they could change about their body. Thatβs part of being embodied β being in dialogue with form. And just as itβs a gift to learn to love the things we once resisted, it’s equally sacred to change what no longer fits. That might mean tattoos, piercings, hormone therapy, surgery, or simply speaking your truth out loud. Each of us gets to decide what wholeness looks like for us.
It must be said: de-transition is extremely rare. Statistically, more people regret winning the lottery than transitioning medically. Let that truth anchor your compassion.
And if you are cisgender and wondering how to support us, start here:
- Listen with your whole heart.
- Affirm us with your words and actions.
- Challenge misinformation β especially when no one else is watching.
Empathy is spellwork too.
π―οΈ A Rite of Divine Balance
Place two candles before you β one gold, representing masculine energies like the sun, one silver, representing feminine energies like the moon. You can use other colors that symbolize masculine and feminine to you.
Sit between them and breathe deeply.
Say aloud:
βI am born of the God and the Goddess. I carry fire and water, sun and moon, sword and chalice. I am not half. I am whole. I honor the masculine within me. I honor the feminine within me. I honor the sacred third β the mystery that is mine alone.β
Let the flames speak to each other through your spirit.
Feel them meet, merge, and dance within you.
This is the power of the nonbinary. This is the magic of balance.
