Wicca has traditionally embraced a binary worldview centered on polarity. However, as our understanding of gender evolves, so too must our language. The Aspen Tradition honors a creator god and goddess while making every effort to avoid unnecessary gendered terminology in our practice.
We believe that separate is never truly equal—and that enforced separation is often used as a tool of inequality. Language shapes perception, and we intentionally avoid gendered titles like priestess. A priest is a priest, regardless of gender. This aligns with broader linguistic shifts, such as actresses now being called actors and heroines called heroes.
This principle extends beyond gender. The world is richer and more complex than simple binaries—beyond “this or that,” beyond “black or white.” Expanding our language helps us expand our worldview, fostering inclusivity and honoring the intricate web of life in all its diversity.
